The Sustainability of Thailand’s Protected-Area System under Climate Change

نویسندگان

چکیده

Protected areas are the backbone of biodiversity conservation but vulnerable to climate change. Thailand has a large and well-planned protected area system, covering most remaining natural vegetation. A statistically derived global environmental stratification (GEnS) was used predict changes in bioclimatic conditions across system for 2050 2070, based on projections from three CMIP5 earth models two representative concentration pathways (RCPs). Five zones were identified composed 28 strata. Substantial spatial reorganization bioclimates is projected next 50 years, even under RCP2.6, while RCP8.5 average upward shift all by 2070 328–483 m coolest zone disappears with models. Overall, 7.9–31.0% Thailand’s land will change 31.7–90.2% stratum. The consequences less clear, particularly lowlands where existing vegetation mosaic determined largely factors other than climate. Increasing connectivity along temperature rainfall gradients would allow species migrate response change, this be difficult much Thailand. For isolated that cannot move fast enough, more active, species-specific interventions may necessary.

Managing protected areas under climate change: challenges and priorities.

The implementation of adaptation actions in local conservation management is a new and complex task with multiple facets, influenced by factors differing from site to site. A transdisciplinary perspective is therefore required to identify and implement effective solutions. To address this, the International Conference on Managing Protected Areas under Climate Change brought together internation...

Assessing climate change-robustness of protected area management plans—The case of Germany

Protected areas are arguably the most important instrument of biodiversity conservation. To keep them fit under climate change, their management needs to be adapted to address related direct and indirect changes. In our study we focus on the adaptation of conservation management planning, evaluating management plans of 60 protected areas throughout Germany with regard to their climate change-ro...

Protected areas' role in climate-change mitigation.

Globally, 15.5 million km(2) of land are currently identified as protected areas, which provide society with many ecosystem services including climate-change mitigation. Combining a global database of protected areas, a reconstruction of global land-use history, and a global biogeochemistry model, we estimate that protected areas currently sequester 0.5 Pg C annually, which is about one fifth o...

The Reduced Effectiveness of Protected Areas under Climate Change Threatens Atlantic Forest Tiger Moths

Climate change leads to species' range shifts, which may end up reducing the effectiveness of protected areas. These deleterious changes in biodiversity may become amplified if they include functionally important species, such as herbivores or pollinators. We evaluated how effective protected areas in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest are in maintaining the diversity of tiger moths (Arctiinae) unde...

Projected impacts of climate change on a continent-wide protected area network.

Despite widespread concern, the continuing effectiveness of networks of protected areas under projected 21st century climate change is uncertain. Shifts in species' distributions could mean these resources will cease to afford protection to those species for which they were originally established. Using modelled projected shifts in the distributions of sub-Saharan Africa's entire breeding avifa...
